Trespass

Project type

Performance Art

Date

February 2024

Location

Arthouse, Arnhem

the fence as an obstacle
the fence as an enemy
the fence as a border
the fence as an assault
the fence as protection
the fence as a cage
the fence as a fortress

and the body entangled in it

Two hours of pushing through the wire. Iteration of force and tenderness, push and pull. Action from the body, reaction from the wire. Interaction, intra-action and interrogation of what is human and what is inhumane.

The performance refers to the “border crisis” on the Poland-Belarussian border. In 2021 the Belarusian authorities began to transfer migrants from the Middle East and Africa across the border with the EU to the territory of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. The Polish border guard has been committing illegal push-backs, forcing migrants back into Belarus. In the forests surrounding the border there still are people in a state of extreme hunger and hypothermia, requiring immediate medical assistance. Humanitarian aid organizations and medics are not allowed into the zone, even though more deaths are still being confirmed.

"Trespass" was part of the Bodies in Dissent module, produced by HOME OF PERFORMANCE PRACTICES, under the guidance of VestandPage and Pavlos Kountouriotis. All photos by Steef Kersbergen.
